Intrinsic Motivation as the Driver for Behavioral Change

Mindful and Modern Therapies believes that the old-school mentality of external motivations is not a healthy way to motivate long-term behavioral changes.  Instead, inspiring intrinsic motivation is key to an enjoyable learning and change process.  By encouraging and channeling a child’s natural desire to learn, MMT provides evidence-based individualized treatment to our children.  This approach focuses on the whole child and what they specifically need to be successful in life, such as communication, social skills, problem solving, self-advocacy and self-help, just to name a few!

For more information on why MMT is unique, please see this page…

Therapies and services we offer to autistic children aged 18 months – 9:

Do you have concerns your child might be autistic?  ADOS testing is the first step in having your child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD.  Play-based and roughly 30-60 minutes, your child will undergo a series of social interactions that help us determine whether your child might have ASD.  We do accept insurance, but we will need to check to see if your insurance is accepted.  For more information on ADOS testing, please refer to this wikipedia page.

Our Therapeutic Preschool program is an inclusive environment with roles models to gain practice in a realistic settings for social development, practical life skills, self advocacy while building up cognitive and language skills. Our small group setting allows for optimal therapy for each child one on one while participating in activities with peers.

Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) choose the best techniques for helping children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) learn the skills they need to integrate within their family and the greater community.  Creating personalized plans that match their ability levels, our approach incorporates pre-academic, social, communication and self-help skills.  Being one of the only therapy centers located inside a Montessori school, we can help your child with integration into the classroom.

Further, we encourage active participation of the whole family unit, allowing all members to acquire the skills they need to achieve a more harmonious dynamic.  This, in turn, will help the family unit integrate into the larger community on various social outings where anxiety for autistic children can be daunting.

Much of the anxiety for a family of and a child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can come from the inability to communicate effectively.  Encouraging speech and language development can help a family relieve this tension. Our speech therapists will work with your child through constructive play and Montessori activities geared towards a child’s natural curiosity.  Items we work on are:

·      Receptive and Expressive Language

·      Motor Planning and Sequencing (Apraxia)

·      Phonology

·      Attention

·      Fluency

·     Articulation

·     Reading and Reading Comprehension

·      Memory

MMT began and still exists as a Montessori school.  We can provide a natural environment for your child to learn the skills they need to become life-long learners.  Things like real dishes that a child learns how to use, clean, and put away prepares them for the world around them.  Having a garden area for them to learn about nature and how they fit into the picture helps a child to see beyond their immediate surroundings.  This follows the principles of a Montessori education, and will allow your child to develop their entire self – physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

With our Occupational Therapy, we will help your child become independent in all aspects of their daily lives.  Some of the skills we develop and personalize to a child’s needs are:

  • handwriting development
  • visual motor coordinationdaily self-care skills
  •  daily self-care necessities (brushing hair, cleaning hands, etc.)
  • social interaction between family, peers, and community
  • visual perception training
  • strength and coordination building
  • self-regulation
  • sensory processing
  • feeding habits
  • motor planning
  • early development with infants

Working from Gross (running, walking, balancing) to Fine (pinching, cutting, prying) Motor Skills, we will help your child strengthen their bodies and improve their stamina for the tasks they will face on a daily basis.  From playing with their peers to accomplishing the tasks they are interested in independently, the children we help build confidence and competency through our Physical Therapy sessions.

Further, we believe in safety and accessible play for all ages, which is why we purchased the Landscape Structures Inclusive Playgrounds.  These top-of-line commercial playgrounds are the same ones that the Parks & Rec of Carmel and Zionsville use to keep children of all ages in mind.  Further, with our mulching of at least one foot deep, we ensure that children have a soft landing, reducing potential injuries.

Building upon the foundations of our other services/therapies, Developmental Therapy is taking a big picture look at how to help a child integrate within their family unit, their peers, and the greater community around them.  Using play-based sessions to inspire a child’s creativity and joy, we will create a plan to help them be their best self and help parents encourage their child to bloom.
